În timpul legii marţiale, credeam că aş putea face un film despre tipii care desenează graffiti pe ziduri. Toată lumea desena tot felul de graffiti pe ziduri: împotriva legii marţiale, împotriva lui Jaruzelski, împotriva comuniştilor şi aşa mai departe. “WRON won za Don.” Acesta era cel mai important. WRON era Consiliul Militar pentru Salvare Naţională (Wojskowa Rada Ocalenia Narodowego). Won e cuvântul rusesc pentru a se duce dracului. Za Don înseamnă peste Fluviul Don, adică să plece din Polonia. “WRON won za Don.” Erau astfel de graffiti-uri şi de multe alte feluri: caricaturi şi aşa mai departe. Armata lupta împotriva acestor graffiti. O parte specială a armatei sau brigăzi militare au fost destinate acestui scop. Nu ştiu exact cine. Şi voiam să fac un film numit Pictorul (Malarz), despre un băiat, un flăcău, care e în armată şi pictează peste graffiti-uri. Pentru că ei într-adevăr pictau peste ele sau le ştergeau sau le transformau în altceva. Modificau, de asemenea, literele, ca să le facă să sune favorabil comuniştilor; era teribil de amuzant, până la urmă. Am considerat că ar fi fost un film nostim.
În afară de ideea asta, voiam să fac un film care s-ar fi petrecut în tribunale. Tribunalele, la acea vreme, dădeau numeroase condamnări lungi pentru delicte neînsemnate. Dădeau sentinţe de doi până la trei ani pentru desenatul de graffiti, pentru faptul de fi fost prins cu un ziar subversiv, pentru greve sau orice formă de rezistenţă. Sentinţele erau înmânate celor prinşi după stingere, adică după opt sau zece seara. Aşa că voiam să fac un film care să se petreacă numai în tribunale şi în care să existe feţele a numai doi oameni. Acuzatorul şi acuzatul. Adică, filmul să fie despre “vinovaţi” – vinovaţi între ghilimele, pentru că acei oameni nu erau, de fapt, vinovaţi de nimic – şi despre acuzatori. […] Ei erau clar împotrivă să permită cuiva să noteze, să filmeze sau să prezinte ceva din toate acestea. Am reuşit să-i explic lui Piesiewicz că voiam să-i apăr pe cei care erau condamnaţi şi să-i prezint pe cei care dădeau verdicte, astfel încât să existe dovada acestor fapte, acestui nonsens care continua.
[…] În momentul în care am început să filmez, a început să se întâmple ceva straniu. Judecătorii nu-i mai condamnau pe acuzaţi. Adică, dădeau un fel de sentinţe cu suspendare, care nu erau, de fapt, deloc grele.
Existau două motive pentru aceasta. Primul era acela că tribunalele deveniseră ceva mai puţin severe deoarece legea marţială intrase în vigoare deja de mai bine de un an (asta se întâmpla în noiembrie 1982). Iar cel de-al doilea motiv, pe care l-am găsit foarte interesant, a fost întreaga teamă omenească a judecătorilor în faţa camerei de filmat. Nu mi-am dat seama de asta la început, dar, ulterior, m-am prins destul de repede. Judecătorii nu voiau să fie înregistraţi în momentul în care dădeau sentinţe nedrepte fiindcă ştiau că, dacă eu dădeam drumul la cameră, atunci, cândva în viitor, după trei, zece sau douăzeci de ani, cineva avea să descopere acest film. Şi aveau ei înşişi grijă. Bineînţeles, ei apăreau în toate documentele, semnau hârtii; dar una e să semnezi o bucată de hârtie şi cu totul altceva, din punct de vedere material, să apari pe ecran în momentul în care dai o sentinţă nedreaptă. Acestea sunt chestiuni cu totul diferite.
Apoi a început să se întâmple alt lucru foarte ciudat în tribunal. Iniţial, nimeni nu voia să ne lase să intrăm la vreun proces – în special avocaţii se fereau de asta, ca şi inculpaţii –, ca ulterior să ne roage cu toţii să le filmăm cazurile. S-a ajuns până în punctul în care a trebuit să închiriez o a doua cameră, ca să pot filma două procese în acelaşi timp. Când în sala de judecată se găsea un aparat de filmat, judecătorii nu dădeau pedepse cu închisoarea. Aşa că nici nu încărcam cu film cea de-a doua cameră, pentru că nu era nevoie. Erau pur şi simplu camere moarte, care nu se găseau acolo decât ca, datorită acelei frici omeneşti, judecătorii să nu condamne.
Am petrecut în jur de o lună mişcându-ne înainte şi înapoi dintr-o sală de judecată în alta. Nu ştiu la câte procese am fost – cincizeci, poate mai multe, optzeci poate. Şi n-am filmat nici măcar un singur metru de peliculă pentru ca, în momentul în care porneam aparatul de filmat – şi îl porneam exact când judecătorul era pe cale să spună: “În numele Republicii Poloneze, îl condamn pe cetăţeanul…” -, să nu se constate că nu-l condamna pe cetăţean. Aşa că opream imediat. N-am filmat deloc; n-a ieşit nimic. Nu ştiu, am filmat, poate, şapte minute cu totul şi cu totul, în care puteţi vedea, pe ecran, camera pornind şi oprindu-se din nou. Pornind şi oprindu-se imediat. Aşa l-am cunoscut pe Piesiewicz. El a fost primul care s-a prins ce se întâmpla.

A fost de asemenea interesant să încerci să găseşti un mod de a înfăţişa un om a cărui conştiinţă era curată, dar care nu putea face nimic în Polonia anului 1984. Atunci când făceam filmul. Părea că tocmai de aceea trebuia să arătăm că era mort, pentru că asta reprezenta ideea neputinţei unui om de a face ceva până la ultima limită – pur şi simplu nu mai e aici. A murit. Oameni de felul acesta, oameni cu astfel de conştiinţe limpezi şi cu astfel de mâini curate nu mai au nici o şansă. Dar cum arăţi că nu mai au nici o şansă? Arăţi că nu mai sunt aici. Trebuie să moară. Nu sunt făcuţi pentru aceste vremuri. Nu sunt în stare să supravieţuiască acestor timpuri. Puritatea şi limpezimea lor, intrate în conflict cu aceste vremuri, trebuie să-şi găsească sfârşitul prin dispariţia fizică.

Fără sfârşit n-a fost prezentat cam o jumătate de an. Ulterior, când a fost prezentat, a fost primit îngrozitor în Polonia. Îngrozitor. N-am avut atâtea necazuri cu nici un alt film cum am avut cu acesta. A fost primit îngrozitor de către autorităţi; a fost primit îngrozitor de către opoziţie şi a fost primit îngrozitor de către Biserică. Adică, de cele trei puteri care există în Polonia. Am căpătat o adevărată ciomăgeală pentru el. Numai un factor component nu ne-a atras ciomăgeală, iar acela a fost publicul.

că mirosea a Crăciun în curtea unchiului meu
de la atâtea coroane, niciun rege nu a avut atâtea coroane
câte-a avut verişorul meu
mirosea a Crăciun şi câinii plângeau
căci nu ar fi vrut să moară caii
şi tocmai cel ce-i îngrijea s-a dus
cai putere, cai putere… te-ai grăbit, vere
şi ne-ai scris cum că ai stat „cam” mult…
o să tot stai de-acum încolo
să ne împiedicăm de tine în fiecare colţ sufletesc

Nenea profesoru’ Gabi e vecinul meu de la etajul doi. Lui frate-meu, Horaţiu, nu-i convine, că tot şase are la mate, dar mie îmi place, că tanti Livia ne dă întotdeauna prăjituri când mă duc cu Sergiu să batem covoarele. Sergiu stă la trei şi tot aruncă cu baloane cu apă în nenea Gabi de când a lăsat-o corigentă pe Cristina, sora lui. Nici lui Cristina nu-i place de nenea Gabi şi de aceea e prietena cea mai bună a lui frate-meu. Mama l-a pedepsit odată pe Horaţiu, că i-a ridicat fusta Cristinei, dar Cristina a râs. Nenea Gabi era la geam şi fuma o ţigară. A doua zi i-a dat şase lui frate-meu la şcoală. Dar eu cred că-i un tip de treabă, că a ajutat-o odată pe Cristina, când era mai mică, să se dea jos dintr-un copac, a luat-o-n braţe şi a învârtit-o înainte s-o lase jos. Şi mie îmi place să mă învârtă tati aşa, dar tati nu mă învârte. Dar merge des la bar cu nenea Gabi. Tati spune că nenea Gabi e un om deosebit, că i-a salvat pe toţi din scară înainte de Revoluţie. Că nu contează că tanti Livia e verişoara lui, că i-a salvat pe toţi şi i-a băgat pe trădătorii din neamul lui unde meritau să-şi lase oasele, la pârnaie. Tati ştie ce spune, că toţi vecinii îi zic Şmecheru’, aşa că precis nenea Gabi e un… un… erou, aşa îi spune! Spune tati că oricând are probleme, nenea Gabi le rezolvă. Că la bar întotdeauna bea gratis. Spune multe tati, mai ales când bea. Cântă amândoi, el şi nenea Gabi, în scară. Odată au trimis-o pe Cristina după seminţe şi Cristina a dispărut vreo două săptămâni. Precis au bătut-o părinţii, că era toată plânsă şi vânătă şi nu vorbea cu nimeni când a venit după aceea la şcoală, că pe-afară nu mai ieşea. După aia a început să fie cea mai bună prietenă cu Horaţiu, că nenea Gabi i-a dat patru, dar înainte numai zece avea la mate. Nenea Gabi spune de Cristina că să înveţe dacă vrea să treacă. De săptămâna viitoare a chemat-o la meditaţii şi i-a promis că i le dă pe gratis, numai să-l asculte…

…Când nenea Adam mănâncă mere, pârţurile lui sunt otravă curată: deschidem ferestrele, ieşim cale de-o oră din casă şi gândacii-s morţi când ne-ntoarcem. Am văzut odată şi-un şoarece dându-şi duhul, chiţăia săracul de parcă l-ar fi străpuns prin nas până-n inimă şi l-ar fi pus deasupra focului, se chircea şoarecele ca un bebeluş…

…Nu ştiu ce-i cu lumea asta. Toţi vorbesc tot timpul cuvinte noi, mai ales la televizor, ăia la care se uită tati, cu politica. Şi zice tati că-s nişte răpciugoşi şi lingăi, apoi îi huiduie, îi înjură, apoi se pune iar jos şi-i mai ascultă o leacă, apoi scuipă televizorul şi-o bate pe mama că de ce a votat.

Cel mai interesant e să laşi umbra să vorbească pentru tine… umbrele se confundă tot timpul între ele şi se întreabă mereu:
“Eu am spus asta?”…
Ştiai că până şi vântul face umbră? Face umbră clipei…
orice sunet e umbra unei conştiinţe
de aici, totul se umple de înţelesuri obscure
cine face umbră cui şi de ce
cine înlănţuie şi cine apără
cine ţine, deţine, susţine, reţine
cine ne şi, bine-nţeles, de ce
